MOVING DAY

In the great game of golf, there is a day in a four day tournament that is coined ‘moving day’. That day is the third day of the tournament and it’s typically on Saturday. During the first two days, approximately 140 players attempt to ‘make the cut’. After the second day, all the scores are turned in, and somewhere around 50% of the field qualifies for the next two days, which means they will get a paycheck and have a chance to win the trophy.

Saturday is ‘moving day’. Moving day is the day you either play yourself into contention for the grand prize, the ultimate objective, the winner’s trophy. If you play average, others will surpass you and have much better odds in their favor going into Sunday. If you play poorly, most likely you will fall well behind the field and never catch up. If you play well, you most keep yourself ‘in the hunt’ and have a better chance of winning.

One can’t win the tournament on Saturday, but you can play yourself out of it for sure. Saturday is all about playing well enough to stay in contention to win the tournament.

In life we all come across those moments in life I like to relate to ‘moving day’ in golf. We play ourselves out of contention. We play so so, and in doing so let other get ahead of us and it makes it harder to win. Or, we play well and put ourselves in position where a win is within our grasp. It’s all about the decisions we make on which shot to hit, and how well we execute that shot.
Yesterday felt ‘moving day’ for me in my Challenge. I finalized my decision to leave my current company and start in a new direction by tendering my resignation. It would be easy to stay status quo, keep in the middle of the pack, and go on doing the same. Now is the time to break out rather than stay in the middle of the pack.

Over the next several months I still have a lot of shots to hit.
