It's More Than Cake

"If you really are thankful, what do you do?  You share!   ~ W. Clement Stone

It wasn't just any cake that made me start to think, it was a cake to share with everyone as part of the celebration of Rebecca signing with Marshall University on National Signing Day, when high school athletes can formally commit to a university.  November 14th, Rebecca signed with Marshall in Huntington, WV to study journalism and play for the Thundering Herd woman's softball team.

The Cake…..the cake was decorated with both school's logos.  The Clear Falls 'Knight" and the Marshall University bison, who just happens to be named 'Marco'.  'Congratulations Rebecca' was written across the top, and at the bottom the famous quote with the movie of the same name, "We Are Marshall."  White frosting with green highlights, the green and white, coincidentally both the school colors for the Knights and Thundering Herd.

Held at Clear Falls High School, attending the event were fellow teammates, students, teachers, administrators, her high school coach, former coaches from summer ball, her boyfriend, her sister, and friends of ours.  It was a special event, school history, Rebecca first in her high school ever to sign an athletic scholarship with a university.

A special moment…..I was thankful….and thinking about the cake.

How many times have I experienced a cake cutting ceremony, at birthday's, weddings, anniversaries, and other special events and only thought about the event.   This moment, a uniquely special moment, I was blessed to be thinking about more than just the cake..

As I looked at the cake I started to think about the number of different people who contributed to Rebecca's achievement, some being in the school library for this event, and others who were not.  The symbolic decorative frosting on the cake represented to me that many folks had their hand in making that cake. Lori and I may be the parents of a young girl who worked hard and achieved one of her dreams, but many folks in our community had their hands in helping her achieve it.

I am thankful for all those folks who helped make that 'cake', that had their hand in adding their special touch, those who were there when I wasn't, and those who encouraged her and continue to do so.

In a way, we are all "baker's" in this world, it's just understanding that we are.  We all have our hands in creating, forming, shaping, and seasoning…..we have our hands in a lot of 'cakes'…..Help make it better.    Be thankful, be thankful for others, allow others to be thankful of you.
